Celebrate Christmas in Charlotte’s Historic Small Towns

Sparkling lights, horse-drawn carriages, strolling carolers.  Historic buildings as a backdrop.  You can celebrate an old-fashioned Christmas in Matthews and Waxhaw, two historic small towns in Charlotte.

Both Matthews and Waxhaw have preserved many historic buildings in their downtowns.  These quaint areas offer the perfect setting for Christmas activities throughout the month of December.  Holiday activities start before Thanksgiving leftovers are finished and continue until Christmas Eve.  Here is a week-by-week schedule of 2013 events in these two towns.

November 29th through December 5th

Waxhaw Events

Holiday Festival of Lights  Enjoy a Christmas concert with live performances by area churches and Kensington Elementary singers (5-7pm).  At 7pm  the downtown area is illuminated with over 75,000 lights and Santa arrives.  Visit with Santa and play in the snow from 7:30-9pm.  Free carriage rides will take you around the downtown.  November 29th.

Christmas Tea with Mrs. Claus  The Museum of the Waxhaws will host a Christmas Tea for children from 2-4pm on December 1st.

Matthews Events

The Nutcracker  The Matthews Ballet presents The Nutcracker on November 30th and December 1st at the Fullwood Theater in the Matthews Community Center.

Gingerbread House Contest  Enter your gingerbread house original by November 30th at the Matthews Chamber of Commerce.  Judging will take place on December 7th.

December 6th through December 12th

Waxhaw Events

A Dickens of a Christmas Living Windows  Several storefront windows in downtown will be transformed into stages for live performances of scenes from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.  Actors will change the scenes every 15 minutes.  Carolers in period costumes will stroll the streets.  Performances will take place from 5:30 to 8pm.  Free carriage rides will be offered.  December 6th.

GingerSnap 5K Race  Get your Christmas exercise at the 5K race through downtown.  8am  December 7th.

Polar Express Train Ride   The Library Association of Waxhaw sponsors mini trackless train rides at 10am on December 7th.

Passport to Christmas  Children can learn about cultures around the world all day at the Jaar Center.  8:30-noon and 1:30-5pm.  December 7th.

Matthews Events

Hometown Holiday Festival  Light the town Christmas tree at the Matthews Town Green.  Activities will include children’s crafts and entertainment, carriage rides, magicians and Santa’s arrival.  Pyrotechnics accompany the lighting of the Christmas tree.  3-6pm.  December 7th.

Downtown Matthews Holiday Stroll  The streets will be lined with luminaries and store windows will be decorated for the holidays.  Refreshments, special treats and prizes at participating businesses.  5:30-8pm.  December 7th.

The Nutcracker  December 7th and 8th.

December 13th through December 19th

Waxhaw Events

Live Nativity  Two churches will present the story of Christmas through live nativity scenes.  The Waxhaw United Methodist Church will present the nativity on December 13th and 14th every half hour from 6:30pm to 8pm.  You can take a walk through Bethlehem at the Waxhaw Baptist Church on December 14th from 6 to 9pm.

Christmas Parade  The annual Christmas Parade kicks off at 3pm on December 15th.  Snacks and a visit with Santa follow the parade.

Red Green and Bluegrass  Take a tour of the musical history of bluegrass at the Museum of the Waxhaws on December 19th from 7-10pm.

Matthews Events

A Classic Christmas TV Special   Sampling of musical numbers from TV Christmas specials of yesteryear  December 13th, 14th 15th.  Fullwood Theater. 

Scrooge!  Fullwood Theater  December 14th  8pm

Breakfast with Santa  December 14th and 21st.  Matthews Community Center.

American Girl Christmas Tea  December 14th and 21st.  1pm or 3:30pm.
