Matthews NC Celebrates End of Summer at Matthews Alive Festival

The Matthews Alive Festival is the largest Labor Day festival in the southeast.  Tens of thousands of people fill the quaint Town of Matthews for three days every year for rides, entertainment and crafts.  The 2013 Matthews Alive Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.  Here are some things to do at this year’s festival, which runs from Friday evening August 30 through Monday September 2.

  1. Watch a parade.   The annual Matthews Alive Parade kicks off at 10:30am on Saturday morning, August 31st.  You’ll see marching bands, floats, drill teams and much more as the parade marches through downtown Matthews.
  2. Take a ride or play a game at the carnival midway.  You’ll find fun for everyone at the Family Fun area.  Game booths are sponsored by local non-profit groups with 100% of the proceeds going to the community.  This year the midway will have a new ferris wheel and drop zone.  Friday night is always All-You-Can-Ride Armband night for $15.
  3. Take the youngest children to the Kids Crafts Pavilion or to see a show. If they’re tired of the rides, they may enjoy hands-on craft projects.   The Kids Crafts Pavilion is next to the Children’s Stage where they can watch a magic show, a clown show, a ventriloquist, and a juggler.  If it’s hot or rainy outside, find relief inside the Cultural Center with puppet shows and a hula hoop performance.
  4. Kick back and enjoy musical entertainment.  Friday night is Beach and Buffet night with The Key West Band and The Embers performing on the stage at Stumptown Park.  Saturday is the night to rock with Bostyx, a tribute band playing the hits of Boston and Styx.  Restless Heart headlines country night on Sunday evening.  Enjoy the music of the 60s and 70s with Carolina Voices on Monday afternoon at the Cultural Center Stage.
  5. Shop for your favorite arts and crafts.  Over 160 booths will feature textiles, pottery, painting and other crafts from Saturday through Monday.
