Enjoy Public Art Along Matthews NC Greenway

On a recent Saturday morning, the Matthews Greenway was filled with walkers, joggers and bicyclists.  The greenway is a two-mile paved path along Four Mile Creek that goes from South Trade Street near Matthews Elementary School to East John Street.  It’s a wonderful addition to the walkability of downtown Matthews.

A sewer line with manholes and standpipes follows the same path along Four Mile Creek as the Greenway trail.  The Town of Matthews has started a program for local artists to creatively use the sewer line structures for public art.  A pair of giraffes created from adjacent manhole covers with standpipes is the first artwork to be finished.

On Saturday, the giraffes were a landmark for a family asking their pre-school child if he wanted to go see them.  Other artwork finished along the greenway includes a manhole with a butterfly and a standpipe with painted vines.

The public art along the greenway is the latest effort in Matthews to provide art for residents and visitors.  The McDowell Art Center (MAC) opened in December 2012 to provide exhibition and classroom space for local artists.  A historic building built in the 1920s adjacent to the elementary school was renovated into two large rooms with beautiful wood floors for displaying artwork plus a room for classes in the basement.  Current classes at the MAC include oil painting for adults, art classes for veterans and the developmentally disabled, and scrapbooking.

At the end of September, the 28th annual Artfest of Matthews will be held at the Town Green in front of Town Hall.  This is a juried fine art show that typically has over 60 artists displaying and selling their art and craft work.  The Artfest includes a children’s area with pottery lessons and crafts and a local high school art scholarship competition.  The Artfest of Matthews will take place on September 28th and 29th.
