McDowell Arts Center Opens in Matthews NC

Historic downtown Matthews NC just gained another community facility: the McDowell Arts Center. The McDowell Arts Center was dedicated on December 1 in a grand opening ceremony. The public was invited to tour the newly renovated facility after the ceremony.

If you’ve lived in Matthews for any length of time, you probably remember the building adjacent to Matthews Elementary School. Called the Agriculture Building, it was owned by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system until 2008. It was built in the 1920s as an extension of Matthews High School, which is now the Matthews Community Center. Before being transferred to the Town of Matthews, the building was used for elementary classes of various types.

Now the building has been renovated into two beautiful rooms with wood flooring on the second/street level and another large room on the first level. Bathrooms and an elevator have been added to the building. The McDowell Arts Center provides display space for works by the Matthews Artists Guild as well as classroom space for KidzArt programs.

The Arts Center is the newest component of the Matthews Cultural Arts District. Other facilities in the arts district include the adjacent Matthews Community Center and Stumptown Park.
