Matthews NC Certified As A Community Wildlife Habitat

Environmental awareness is very much a part of the Matthews NC lifestyle. The town has been part of a project for the last two years to become certified as a Community Wildlife Habitat. HAWK (Habitat and Wildlife Keepers), the group sponsoring this project, has just learned that the entire town has achieved certification after a two year effort.

Matthews is one of only four towns in North Carolina and 65 towns in the entire country to achieve this status. The Matthews campaign was called Matthews Naturally by HAWK. The campaign needed to earn 450 points for certification. Points were earned by having a certain number of private yards designated as Backyard Wildlife Habitats, creating Schoolyard Wildlife Habitats, and from environmental projects, programs and educational programs. Matthews Naturally is an ongoing program as backyard wildlife habitats are continuing to be established by town residents.

In recent years, the Town of Matthews has created areas where residents can enjoy nature and wildlife. The Matthews Four Mile Creek Greenway winds through the heart of downtown Matthews. A two-mile paved pathway leads through a wooded area along the creek. Squirrel Lake Park, another park near downtown, can be accessed from the Greenway. Squirrel Lake is another certified wildlife habitat in Matthews.
