Matthews Alive Festival 2012--Fun Things to Do

On Labor Day weekend, historic downtown Matthews NC will fill with over 200,000 people attending the 20th annual Matthews Alive Festival. Matthews Alive is the southeast’s largest street festival on this holiday weekend.

The 2012 festival opens on Friday evening, August 31st and runs through 5pm on Monday, September 3rd. You’ll find the activities along South Trade Street from the John Street intersection to Stumptown Park to the grounds of Matthews Elementary School and in the Matthews Community Center.

What are some of the fun things to do at Matthews Alive?

  1. Take the kids on the carnival rides. The Family Fun area has rides, games, and amusements for kids of all ages. You can purchase a wristband for multiple rides or buy single tickets. The games are sponsored by non-profit groups in the community and proceeds go to these charitable groups.
  2. Eat your favorite carnival food at the food court. Over 30 vendors provide that festival food that you love.
  3. Stroll through the Arts and Crafts Pavilion. Over 160 booths featuring artists and crafts people from all over the United States will be available on the grounds of Matthews Elementary. The Arts and Crafts Pavilion is open Saturday through Monday.
  4. Watch a real home town parade. At 10am on Saturday morning, the Matthews Alive Parade will fill the downtown streets with floats, bands, beauty queens, fire trucks and other vehicles. The whole family will enjoy this patriotic display.
  5. Let the kids enjoy hands-on activities at the Kids Connection area. Crafts activities, pony rides and miniature train rides are available in this area. Story telling, magic acts, clowns and other acts will fill the Children’s Stage in this area.
  6. Take a break from the heat at the Matthews Alive Cultural Center. Step inside the Matthews Community Center and you’ll find art work by local artists on display, a local quilting show and an exhibit of baskets woven by local artists.
  7. Bring your lawn chairs to enjoy outdoor entertainment on three stages. Live entertainment at the 2012 festival includes some well-known acts, including the Grammy-award winning country band Shenandoah. You can also hear beach music, several tribute bands and a variety act.
  8. See classic cars and motorcycles at the Matthews Auto Reunion. The cars and cycles will line the street around the Village Green in front of the Matthews Town Hall on Monday, September 3rd from 9am to 4pm.
