Matthews Elementary School is located in the heart of historic downtown Matthews
NC. The current school building, built in 1970, stands where Matthews area
students have attended school since the early 1900s. There are a number of
neighborhoods within walking distance of Matthews Elementary.
Matthews Elementary is a kindergarten through fifth grade school on a
traditional calendar. In the 2010-11 school year, the school had approximately
980 students. Class sizes ranged from 20 to 27 students. Matthews Elementary
students have a choice of extracurricular clubs and activities, including
Spanish club, book club, Odyssey of the Mind and Science Olympiad.
Additionally, family activities include movie nights at Stumptown Park and an
annual carnival.
The school was designated an Honor School of Excellence with Expected Growth
in the 2010-11 school year. It also met all of its performance targets under
the No Child Left Behind Act.
