Program

Marvin Ridge, a public high school in Union
County NC, offers a rigorous academic program for its
students. Like other Union County high schools, Marvin Ridge has
Advanced Placement courses available in English, history, math, experimental
science, social sciences and visual arts. Students may enroll in the school’s
Advanced Placement courses based on the student’s specific interests.
Marvin Ridge also offers the International Baccalaureate Program or
IB Program. The IB Program is a holistic course of study with
international standards of academic rigor. Marvin Ridge’s motto is “Passport to
the World” symbolizing the school’s vision to incorporate international
awareness and a desire to better the world.
The two-year course begins in a student’s junior year. At
Marvin Ridge, subjects are offered in six groups.
Language is studied in a two-year course of literary works in English or
English translations. Students also develop proficiency in a second language of
Chinese, French, German or Spanish.
U.S. History is studied in the first year. World History from the 1800s to
the present is studied in the second year. A third course in this group
explores the issues and ethics of information technology in a global
society.
Experimental Sciences courses include experimental Chemistry and Biology
courses studying biochemistry and cellular chemistry.
Mathematics courses cover all seven math content areas including
Calculus.
Visual arts is a two-year course where students create and
orally present visual artwork.
Applications for the Marvin Ridge IB program will be accepted January
2 through 25, 2012. The application process is open to all rising
juniors at the school.
