Charlotte NC Relocation--How Do I Get My Driver's License and Register My Car?

Moving to Charlotte NC from another state? After you've closed on your new home and unpacked the boxes, you'll want to register your car and get your driver's license.

Here are some frequently asked questions about this process.

How long can I wait to get my new license and register my car?

You must get your vehicle licensed within 30 days of establishing residency in NC. You have 60 days to get a North Carolina driver's license. You will have to present a NC driver's license or NC checking account to register your car.

Do I have to take a driving test to get my NC License?

There is no driving test for currently licensed drivers. You will take a vision test plus sign recognition and written tests. You can get a "Drivers Handbook" study guide at DMV offices. Your NC driver's license will be valid for five years.

What documentation do I need to present to get my NC license?

You will need your current out-of-state license and two other forms of ID, such as a passport or birth certificate. You will also need proof of residency such as a utility bill or bank statement, your Social Security card or taxpayer ID, and proof of liability insurance from a NC licensed insurer.

What documentation do I need to register my vehicle?

Present your title and a valid registration card from your former state. If your title is held by a lien holder, you must present a state form for lien holder release.

Within ten days of receiving your license plate, you must obtain a vehicle safety inspection from any state-authorized inspection station. You will need to have the vehicle inspected annually.

Will I have to pay taxes on my vehicle?

Personal property taxes are assessed on vehicles annually by NC counties. You will receive a bill about three months after you receive your license plate.

Where can I find more information about licensing and registration?

Go to www.dmv.dot.state.nc.us.
