Who Let the Dogs into Matthews NC Area Libraries?
Books, computers and people are what I expect to find in my local library. But on Saturdays, you can find dogs in Matthews NC area libraries!

Therapy dogs are part of the children's reading programs in libraries in Matthews NC, Mint Hill NC and Indian Trail NC. I stopped by the Union West Regional Library in Indian Trail this morning and found two groups of children reading to a golden retriever and a golden-doodle. Each dog was patiently sitting on the floor next to a child who was reading aloud. This reading program, designed to help build confidence in children who are embarrassed by their reading skills, has become an extremely popular program in each of these libraries. Offered two Saturday mornings a month at Indian Trail, the program is called Paws to Read. Matthews' Tail Wagging Tutors is held monthly as is the Paws Awhile to Read program in Mint Hill.
Children's programming at these libraries sounds like a lot of fun. The Union West Regional Library, part of the Union County Public Library system, offers book clubs, a Cowboy Poetry Corral for ages 8 and up, a cartooning club, an anime club for teens plus weekly story times for babies through preschoolers.
The libraries in Matthews and Mint Hill belong to the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Each has a number of story telling and club activities for children. Check the web sites of each library system for activities and schedules.
