Union County NC Schools: Just How Good Are They?
The December 15-22, 2008 issue of U.S. News and World Report just identified Monroe High School in Union County NC as one of the top high schools in the United States. This the second year that Monroe High School has made the list.

Just how good are the Union County NC public schools? The Union County Public Schools web site lists other "Points of Pride" for the schools.
- Union County Public Schools has six of the 29 schools in the state that earned the highest designation of Honor School of Excellence out of 2397 schools included in the state testing.
- Union County seniors scored higher on the SATs than state and national levels for the third year in a row.
- The Union County Public School system ranks #1 among the nine largest school systems in the state with percentage of schools making AYP or Adequate Yearly Progress.
- Union County graduating seniors brought in $31.7 million in college scholarships in 2008, an all-time record.
- Three schools have been named Schools of Excellence every year since they opened: Weddington Elementary (10 years), Weddington Middle (9 years), and Marvin Elementary (six years).
