Matthews Alive Festival in Downtown Matthews NC

Many Carolinas small towns host street festivals but the grandaddy of all the festivals in the Charlotte region is the Matthews Alive festival held every Labor Day weekend.  Matthews Alive began as the Stumptown Festival in the 1980s as a way to raise funds to preserve the old Matthews High School.  Thirty years later, Matthews Alive is the largest Labor Day festival and parade in the southeastern United States.  The Matthews High School has been restored and upgraded and now provides a spot for town parks and recreational activities as the Matthews Community Center.  The Matthews Alive Festival raises funds for a variety of charitable organizations and provides a great weekend of fun.

Over 175,000 people were expected to attend Matthews Alive 2008.  This year's festival included a Classic Auto and Motorcycle Show on the Village Green at the Town Hall, live music from several stages, carnival rides and food, and arts and craft booths.  The Matthews Alive Festival photo gallery has pictures of the 2008 festival.
