First Day of School in Union County NC
Groups of children and their parents were waiting at the bus stops when I took a walk this morning. It's the first day of school for Union County NC students and some of them are attending brand new schools. The photo of the new Stallings Elementary shows that they haven't had time yet for the exterior landscaping but the Stallings Stallions have already had a summer festival and an open house.
Students in the Indian Trail area also have a brand new elementary school. Sun Valley Elementary opens today on land immediately behind Shiloh Elementary School, an existing school that has a year-round calendar. The Shiloh Elementary pupil assignment area was divided to relieve the school's overcrowding and the trailer classrooms are gone. According to the Union County Public School administrator in charge of pupil assignment, parents who live in these two assignment areas may not transfer from one school to another in order to select a traditional or a year-round calendar. Construction of Sun Valley Elementary was not completed in time to begin the year-round calendar this summer but a vote by the school board later this year may turn the school into a year-round school next year like its sister school, Shiloh Elementary. These two schools are shown below.
Newcomers to the Indian Trail area should know that enrollment at Sun Valley Middle School has been capped for students never enrolled in the school. The school simply will not accommodate any more students. If you are thinking of moving into a neighborhood assigned to Sun Valley Middle this year, your middle-schooler will be assigned to either Monroe Middle School or Weddington Middle School for the 2008-09 year. Bus service will be provided to the new school. The cap is expected to be lifted next year when a new middle school will relieve the overcrowding.
