Mailing Addresses, Town Boundaries, and School Zones in Union County North Carolina

Do you have a Matthews mailing address, live within the boundaries of the Town of Weddington and attend the Marvin Ridge schools?  Welcome to Union County North Carolina where figuring out where you live can be very confusing.  The first thing that a newcomer needs to understand is that postal delivery and school zones do not necessarily conform to town boundaries.  Here are some things to know about where you live...

  • School districts in North Carolina are county-wide districts.  The school boards create pupil assignment zones for each of the schools. These zones do not correspond to town boundaries.  In high growth areas such as Union County, these assignment areas are subject to change as schools get overcrowded and new schools are built.
  • Because Union County was until recently a rural county, the post offices serve large areas.  The Indian Trail post office, for example, delivers in parts of Indian Trail, Stallings, Monroe, and Lake Park.  That's how it's possible to live in Lake Park but have an Indian Trail mailing address.
  • The Town of Matthews lies entirely within Mecklenburg County but a number of homes in Union County served by the Matthews post office have Matthews mailing addresses.  How do you tell the difference between the Mecklenburg and the Union homes served by the Matthews post office? 28105 is the zip code for the Mecklenburg areas served by Matthews and 28104 is the zip code for the Union County mailing addresses.

How does somone unfamiliar with the area who is looking at real estate websites determine where the property is located?   If the information is available, look at the property's tax location not its mailing address.  If tax location is not available, remember to look beyond the mailing address and zip code for more information.  Try mapping the property or using the Union County geographic information system.
