Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS)

The Charlotte region's public schools are consolidated into countywide school districts. Charlotte-Mecklenburg is the largest district in the State of North Carolina and among the top 25 in the nation. There are 161 schools in CMS and over 129,000 students.

Student assignment zones to individual schools do not correspond to city or town boundaries. As new schools are built to accommodate the growth of neighborhoods and the student population, student assignment zones can and do change. Private and Charter Schools

The Charlotte region has many independent private schools, both secular and religious. The Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools provide a system of eight parochial schools within Mecklenburg County. There are several charter schools within the county as well. Charter schools are created and run by parents and/or community organizations but receive public per-pupil funding from the state. Enrollment in the charter schools is by lottery.

Colleges and Universities

Charlotte is home to a number of colleges and universities. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) is the state's fourth largest university. Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), the state's largest community college, has six campuses across Mecklenburg County. Queens University and Johnson C. Smith University are private institutions offering undergraduate classes in Charlotte.

Johnson & Wales University recently located its headquarters campus in uptown Charlotte. It is a top-rated culinary school and offers degrees in hospitality and business.
