Charlotte's Cultural Life

Opportunities to participate in cultural and arts events abound in Charlotte.  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Arts and Science Council has developed to provide a one-stop shop for arts and cultural events information.

The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County is an award-winning system with branches throughout the county and a number of innovative programs.  The new ImaginOn, located in Center City, is a joint project of Children's Theatre of Charlotte and the library.  ImaginOn covers 100,000 sq.ft. and includes performance spaces, library areas, a technology center, classrooms, and a teen center.

Sports and Athletic Recreation in Charlotte

The mild weather in Charlotte makes participation in sports and outdoor recreation a year-round activity.  There are more than 20 area YMCAs with everything from swimming to youth and adult sports leagues.  The area includes many parks, including several nature preserves.  Boating and fishing are available at Lake Norman on the north side of Mecklenburg County and Lake Wylie to the south.

A brand new facility is the U.S. National Whitewater Center on the banks of the Catawba River.  This facility brings Olympic-caliber athletes from around the country to train.  It includes an artificial river with controllable rapids, an adventure center with climbing walls and ropes courses, more than 11 miles of hiking and biking trails and a 37-acre island for camping.

One of the region's most popular recreational activities is golf.  The Charlotte area contains a number of golf courses, both private and with public access.  Top professional golfers play in the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow Club every May.

SouthPark Mall

Shopping in Charlotte

You'll love Charlotte if you love to shop!  The region's high growth means that every type of shopping is available and a neighborhood shopping center probably is near your home or coming soon.

There are shopping malls for every budget.  SouthPark is the most upscale of the malls with anchors like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.  To the northeast is Concord Mills, which has 1.4 million square feet of outlet shops and entertainment.  Carolina Place Mall serves South Charlotte and York County, South Carolina.  The newest mall is Northlake Mall serving North Mecklenburg and Lake Norman, while a new mall will be built in Mint Hill over the next several years.

Specialty shopping centers include Birkdale Village, Phillips Place, and Stonecrest.  The Metrolina Expo hosts a monthly Antique and Collectible Show.  All the familiar big box retailers are found through the area as well.
